Your Jan. 18 editorial cartoon of President Barack Obama taking aim at our Second Amendment rights was quite apropos to the conundrum the gun ban folks and the NRA folks, such as myself, are experiencing. Members of both groups want to prevent another tragedy.
I, personally, would not be too upset if all assault weapons disappeared, but my Second Amendment rights must be guaranteed.
If the gun ban folks would temper their position, and if law-abiding gun owners could trust that any assault rifle ban would not set a precedent for more sweeping gun ban legislation, something could be worked out.
But I neither trust the Democratic Party nor the government to ban assault weapons and leave it be at that. That leaves me with no choice but to oppose any weapons' bans, and with that the untrue slings and arrows of not caring for the safety of our children, a gun nut, etc.
I see nothing but contemptuousness and fighting from both sides in the future, on an issue that all Americans should find no difficulty coming to agreement upon.
