I am responding to the Feb. 20 editorial entitled "Stop gun shows at Lake County fairgrounds."
The Cook County sheriff and city of Chicago chief of police must learn to control their criminals and stop blaming others in Indiana. Chicago has one of the highest homicide rates in the country. Again, not our fault.
Only 1.7 percent of criminals obtained firearms from anyone at a gun show, per the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Cut out the "straw purchaser" nonsense.
Universal background checks penalize only families and other law-abiding people. These checks would criminalize all private firearms transfers between family members and friends who have known each other all their lives. This is nothing more than a start to national gun registration prohibited by law since 1986.
Gun show dealers have been required to have a federal firearms license since 1986. An "NICS" check is done before the sale is completed.
If we are going to stop something, let's stop the gun show hysteria.
