Lowell residents have already been forced to pay the fire hydrant fee ($4.90 a month $58.80 a year), which I also don’t agree with. I believe the new fee should be illegal.
The residents already pay a higher tax rate than those who live outside the town limits. I’m certain our views as to the reason for different rates will differ. Let me spare you the political explanation and make it simple.
We pay a higher tax rate for these services, which include fire hydrants and city sewers, among other obvious services. The tax rates in Lowell is about 2.6 percent or 1.8 higher than those for outside of the town limits, depending on the township.
Those taxpayers who live outside the limits pay about $35 a year, or $3 a month, for the Clean Water Act. Now the Lowell Town Council wants us to pay $7 a month or $84 a year, much more for businesses.
If the Town Council needs another new fee (tax), it has not done a good job of managing the taxpayer’s money.
