This letter is in response to Rich James' column in which he ponders whether Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. is electable as the Democratic candidate for governor.
James states the only thing that might keep McDermott from being elected is the fact he is from Lake County. I disagree.
McDermott embodies all that is wrong with Democrats in Lake County. Since becoming mayor, Hammond has not passed a single state audit. He was and still is a close political ally of Robert Cantrell, who has done time for public corruption.
While not indicted himself, many people judge a candidate by the company they keep, and McDermott has aligned himself with several Democrats from Lake County who have done time or are currently doing time in a federal penitentiary.
