Military surplus vehicle isn't right for facing shooter

I am all for our local police officers getting the equipment they need for their job but I cannot agree with our local SWAT team taking possession of a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle. Such a vehicle has no place on our streets.

In the event of an active shooter situation, an MRAP would take far too long to be deployed to the scene, with tragic results.

If our officers are concerned about reacting to an active shooter situation, then each patrol car should be equipped with a rifle of an appropriate caliber. Each officer should be trained in the effective use of these rifles.

In the event an active shooter situation occurs, the responding officers will then have the tools needed to protect the public available to them immediately, instead of waiting for an over-armored monstrosity to arrive.
