On Oct. 25, I attended Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.'s breakfast honoring volunteers who give of their time and talents to augment and/or improve the functioning of various city services (i.e. Crime Watch). The physical setting was elegant and the breakfast was sumptuous.

The sole disappointing issue for me was the absence of the Pledge of Allegiance after the posting of the colors. After several seconds, three grade school females broke the silence by singing the national anthem.

Was anyone else chagrined by the omission noted?
