Proposed amendment violates constitutional principles

The Constitution expresses the separation of church and state, yet at present there is a conservative surge that seeks a precise governmental definition of marriage.

Some have even gone as far as desiring a constitutional amendment defining its “sanctity." There is monumental hypocrisy in this.

The Republican Party platform stands against “big government," yet they are willing to push forward legislation that not only contradicts the Constitution but also forces a singular morality upon Americans.

There is no greater example of “big government” than this. It is the government’s sworn duty to serve and protect every American, regardless of race, class or sexual orientation. This amendment, if passed, will become the 21st century equivalent to the old Jim Crow laws of the South. It will demonize a percentage of the population for their differences and deny freedom in a land founded on that very ideal.
