Right-to-work bill brings up question of fairness

January 20, 2012 1:00 am

According to Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and other Republican leaders, we have lost many opportunities to attract businesses to our state because of our union closed shop laws. When asked what companies didn't come here because of the closed shop, there is no answer given.

One of the issues no one seems to be reporting is the idea of fairness. If right-to-work goes through, then a person can work in a union environment without paying dues yet receive all of the benefits of membership. How is this fair?

Can businesses in our town refuse to pay dues to the chamber of commerce and still receive benefits? Can you go to Sam's Club or Costco and shop without having a paid membership?

We seem to think that it is ridiculous for anyone to expect benefits under these conditions, but it is perfectly fine to have the unions conform to this.
