In 2012, our country experienced two devastating shootings, the theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., and the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Connecticut. It was later revealed in both cases that the shooter had some kind of mental illness.
People with severe mental illness should have no access whatsoever to lethal firearms.
I believe all this time being spent making stricter gun laws could be solved by not outlawing the weapons, but instead making stricter laws about who can buy them.
When someone goes to buy a gun at a store, a background check on the buyer and their family would be necessary. The gun store would be responsible for checking if the buyer himself or anyone in his or her family has a severe mental illness. If so, the buyer would be denied access to purchasing the weapon.
If this were a law, it would fix a lot of problems concerning mass shootings.
