I am writing on behalf of Save the Dunes in response to your Feb. 16 editorial, “Shutting down waterways sounds fishy.”
It’s important to understand the concept of separating the Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins is not only about keeping Asian carp out. This is just one of over 30 current species of concern that could harm the ecology – and economy – of our lakes.
Also, through innovation, technology, and reliance on our “can-do” spirit of innovation in Indiana, we will find a way to separate the waterways while accommodating shipping interests.
The GLMRIS report outlines various methods to do this, and we must keep in mind that there are likely solutions available that will allow us to protect our lake and sustain business locally.
We also must smartly design the system to protect Northwest Indiana’s significant investments in flood prevention along the Little Calumet River and in the cleanup of the Grand Calumet River.
