Lake Station Mayor Keith Soderquist and his wife were federally indicted for using campaign finances for personal expenses. How is that any different from what Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. and his wife do?

McDermott’s campaign pays his wife $40,000 a year, and he reimburses himself $25,000 per year in personal expenses. He also donates campaign money to charities he or his family personally benefit from.

When I complained to the Lake County Election board about this spending by McDermott and his wife, they blew me off. Of course, as Democratic Lake County chairman, McDermott appointed the majority of that board. It is chaired by his personal attorney, Kevin Smith.

While I applaud the U.S. attorney for his work cleaning up Lake County politics, he has a lot more work to do. Soderquist is small potatoes compared to McDermott.
