Students struggle with learning science; let's not confuse them even further

February 05, 2012 12:00 am

Senate Bill 89 (supported in committee by Sen. Frank Mrvan, D-Hammond) would allow school districts to force creationism into the science classroom.

I teach literature. My position enjoys privileges my peers in the science classroom dream of. No student has told me supernatural forces created books nor mentioned what his pastor said about similes last Sunday. I teach intelligent design, but only books designed by intelligent authors.

My unfortunate science colleagues find their subject hard-fought because students have been exposed to creationist claims at home or church. If they had been able to write "God did it!" on the science section of Indiana's last ISTEP, one-third of them would not have failed the test, but our students need more time with the hard science they are failing before we begin teaching them controversies they already know enough about. Oppose Senate Bill 89.
