Thank you for your Aug. 25 editorial ("Alcohol, water can be a deadly combination") regarding the dangers of drinking and boating.

The U.S. Coast Guard, state and local law enforcement agencies across the country have done a great deal in recent years to focus on the danger intoxicated boat operators present to fellow boaters, paddlers and swimmers.

In June, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators coordinated the fourth annual Operation Dry Water, funded through a grant from the U.S. Coast Guard Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety. This nationwide effort seeks to focus attention on the dangers of drinking and boating near the start of the boating season.

We thank the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and all of the other law enforcement agencies across the nation who joined in this effort to make our waterways safe and secure.

- Tom Hayward, Chief Financial Officer, National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, Lexington, Ky.
