Thank you for your stirring editorial on Feb. 27. While I served as Maria Becerra’s lawyer in this matter, I actually write as a lifelong civil rights lawyer who appreciates the willingness of an editorial board to take on the “elephant in the room” that many communities do not want to talk about.

I have circulated your editorial to my colleagues around the country, and commended it to them and their allies. Recognition of this kind of advocacy gives encouragement to people confronting similar injustice in communities from coast to coast.
