Protecting our schoolchildren doesn't have to involve 54,000 policemen sitting on their duffs in our schools eight hours a day at an approximate cost of $50,000 each per year.

How about a plan that has them at school entrances only at times when children are arriving and leaving? In the interval, the building and children are protected by bullet- and shatterproof glass on steel entrance doors with armored locks. Steel doors with armored locks on all classroom doors also secure the classrooms in the unlikely event an intruder gains access to the interior of the school.

Any tampering at entrances authomatically locks all classroom doors and alerts law enforcement. A single un-reversable switch in the school office can be provided for the same action.

Sound expensive? How much are our children worth?
