Why marriage equality is a right, not a privilege

Growing up in Northwest Indiana is a mixed bag of opinions and experiences. Indiana, a conservative state on the whole, is contrasted by the more liberal mindset of the Chicago-influenced northwest.

As a gay citizen of Indiana, I argue my case that marriage equality is a right.

I draw my first parallel by simple observation. A driver’s license is awarded to any resident meeting certain criteria, namely an age limit. Abuse this privilege, and repercussions are imminent.

However, the privilege of driving differs from the right to marry. That is, one may marry and divorce repeatedly to their heart’s (dis)content and suffer no ramifications whatsoever; if marriage were a privilege, equally reckless habits would certainly call for implications of sorts, as all privileges do.

Simply put, a privilege is granted while a right is inherent. Denying a right, or a privilege, at that, is simply a political justification for obtuse bigotry.
