HAMMOND | A single-story home in the 4800 block of Oak Avenue in Hammond was damaged during a fire late Sunday.

The fire started about 8 p.m., authorities said.

As emergency officials arrived, smoke was coming out of the house, Hammond Fire Chief Jeff Smith said. The family living inside got out of the home and no injuries were reported.

Smith said the smoke grew heavier when firefighters opened the windows in the house.

He said the cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.

Firefighters were talking to the family Sunday night, and they weren't sure how many people lived at the home.
