You may know Bethel Church as the building with the big pillars on Broadway. With or without the pillars, Bethel aims to be a source of strength to the Northwest Indiana community.

Bethel had its beginnings in the 1930s through a simple community Bible study. Meeting in Gary, Indiana, this small group grew and soon became an established church. In March of 1969 the congregation moved into a new location in Merrillville. In the spring of 2000, Bethel celebrated its first worship service in a new facility on Broadway Avenue in Crown Point.

In the summer of 2012, Bethel was blessed with its first multisite campus, merging with Community Bible Church in Cedar Lake, now known as Bethel Cedar Lake. Today, growth at Bethel continues and new expansions are on the horizon.

Bethel’s weekend services consist of a time of contemporary music followed by expository preaching by Senior Pastor Steve DeWitt, among other Bethel pastors. Classes for kids ages newborn to fifth grade are provided during the services.

Bethel offers programs and ministries for men, women, children, students, and senior citizens. Among the church’s many community ministries are a food pantry, a program for adults with disabilities, a deaf ministry, and mentorship/provision to single parents.

Brad Lagos, Pastor of Small Groups at Bethel, emphasizes the importance of relationships when ministering to the community. “We hope that the people of Bethel will be broken by the needs they see all around them and experience a deep, personal commitment to share with others the love of Christ in both tangible and spiritual ways. We don’t just want to do ‘drive-by’ community service; we want to be in it for the long haul and see lasting change through repeated investment.”
