As a child, Dr. Barbara Fluder knew firsthand what it was like to live without clear vision. “I had to wear bifocals at a young age,” recalls Dr. Fluder, whose expertise has benefitted countless patients of Fluder VisionCare in Merrillville. “From the beginning, I knew the importance of diagnosing vision problems promptly.”

Celebrating 20 years in the vision industry this summer, Dr. Fluder works with a long list of patients of all ages, dealing with a variety of vision problems that hinder their ability to enjoy the world around them. Dr. Fluder, who opened her own practice in Merrillville in 2006, explains. “We are especially seeing more and more ‘baby boomers’ that, after years of relatively perfect vision, are beginning to see some changes in their eyesight. I provide co-managed cataract and LASIK care as well as diagnosis and treatment for many eye diseases.”

Undivided attention to the patient and the health of their eyes is something the practice prides itself on. “I often say that we are here for much more than just checking if someone needs glasses or contacts,” says Dr. Fluder, who offers free eye exams to patients less than 12 months of age through the InfantSEE program. “We also want to concentrate on the overall health of the eye and ensure everything is working properly.”

This attention is certainly something that the public might just not find at the latest and greatest big retail type eye shops. “Our patients are not shuttled through here,” exclaims Dr. Fluder, who recently returned from a mission trip to the Dominican Republic where she provided much needed eye care to over 300 patients. “We take the time to sit with them and make sure they are completely satisfied. We even have a separate dispensing and repair room where patients can take their time getting acquainted with their new glasses or contacts.”

Dr. Fluder is also the one in the lab, actually making the glasses in which she prescribes. “Our patients can always feel confident in the quality of care, exams, service and product that they are going to receive,” concludes Dr. Fluder, who is currently collecting old glasses to hand out during next year’s mission trip. “It’s our mission to keep our patients happy and well taken care of.”
