When patients with breathing problems arrive at Franciscan Medical Specialists’ Department of Pulmonary Medicine, everyone from the front desk to the healthcare providers understands and is ready to help quickly.

The entire staff is attuned to people having difficulty breathing,” says Dr. Leonard Buccellato, who is board-certified in pulmonary medical and critical care medicine. “Our eight board-certified pulmonary medicine specialists and two board-certified nurse practitioners make our pulmonary medicine practice the largest and most comprehensive in Northwest Indiana.” Additionally, the Department of Pulmonary Medicine houses a full-service pulmonary function laboratory that is staffed by four highly skilled and certified respiratory therapists.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma comprise well over 90 percent of the practice. People should be aware of those conditions, says Buccellato, because asthma affects 10 percent of the population and COPD is now about the fourth leading cause of death. It is now common place for most people to know someone with COPD or asthma.

The Franciscan Medical Specialists Department of Pulmonary Medicine is ready with knowledge, diagnostic tools, and treatment. “Our patients receive a variety of screening and diagnostic tests prior to their physician appointment, oftentimes on the day of their appointment. We then have the ability to provide the best possible care to our patients and provide timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment,” says Buccellato. It is this ability to provide comprehensive care that makes this practice so unique.

In addition to a comprehensive pulmonary health evaluation, patients who need X-rays or a CAT scan can have it done the same day. “People can go to our in house Imaging Center. They don’t have to wait days, with a doctor writing an order for a scan, the patient scheduling it, then being told, ‘We’ll call you with the results.’ Instead, it’s all done right here.”

When patients must go to a hospital for tests or procedures, the staff at the Department of Pulmonary Medicine is ready to provide assistance. They assist the patient in making the hospital appointment and calling a pharmacy rather than handing the patient a prescription.

“We all take pride in our work,” says Buccellato. “We are widely recognized for providing the same quality care you’ll find in a university setting, but with a much more personal touch and care.”

Franciscan Medical Specialists has offices throughout Northwest Indiana.
