As an oncology nurse, Blue Skies Hospice Executive Director Lisa Guzman had witnessed countless patients dealing with their impending death. Patients who had once lived fulfilling and rewarding lives were now lying in a hospital bed, scared and in pain. And while the doctors filled out charts and the hospitals sent bills, Lisa Guzman took the time to look in the eyes of her patients and hold their hand through one of the toughest moments of their life.“Those patients held a special place in my heart,” reflects Guzman. “Yet, there were so many of them that would have been better treated within a hospice.”

Celebrating their tenth anniversary, Blue Skies Hospice provides personalized services to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Whether within their own homes or in Blue Skies Hospice House, terminally ill patients are given 24 hour care with an emphasis on the patient and family’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

“We not only get close to the patient, but also make a strong connection with the patient’s family,” says Guzman, who will celebrate the company’s tenth anniversary with an open house this March. “It’s rewarding to help people through a difficult time.”

Blue Skies Hospice has one of the few in-patient facilities in the area, located at 2714 169th Street in Hammond, Indiana. Specializing in Alzheimer dementia patient care, Blue Skies Hospice House is able to provide unparalleled symptom management. Patients are also able to receive pain and anxiety management tailored to their unique situation. “We like to say we are the small hospice with the big heart,” says Guzman.

A new feature of Blue Skies Hospice is their transformation services, which provides palliative care and symptom management for those living with a terminal disease. The Transformation and Life Choices (TLC) team provides the services of a doctor, nurse, social worker, chaplain and a large network of volunteers committed to patient care. “It can be a tough time, but having people around you who care can help immensely,” concludes Guzman.
