With 36,000 everyday low prices, the Town & Country Food Markets in Portage and Valparaiso are leaders in providing the brand name products customers want and trust at up to 30 percent savings over regular supermarket prices.
Part of the Strack & Van Til family of grocery stores, Town & Country offers full-service in a warehouse format that focuses on helping customers buy more for less and stretch their food budget. That has been the guiding principle for Town & Country Food Markets since opening in Porter County – to create the best shopping experience for its customers with the lowest cost possible.
“We introduced the warehouse format which is all about price,” says Andy Raab, vice president of Town & Country. “We buy our entire product through deals directly from the manufacturers instead of going through the middle man. We build massive displays and simply cut the cardboard of the box to offer the product inside.”
This no-frills approach lowers the stores’ operating costs, Raab says, with the savings being passed on to customers.
However, savings doesn’t mean scrimping on quality, variety, value or customer service, he says.
“We offer more variety than probably anyone around and we can do everything a full-service store can do except bag your groceries. Our biggest strength is variety and good name-brand products,” Raab says. “We are able to keep tons of inventory in the store because of our big backrooms and warehouse. And our Town & Country stores have a clean and friendly environment.”
The amazing selection of brand-name, quality products at the lowest possible prices might be enough for some stores, but not for Town & Country.
“We offer the same full-service departments as other grocery stores,” Raab says.
“We have everything, from bakery, to meat, produce, and we offer catering in our deli, including cooking seafood,” he says. “Our bakery cakes are made from scratch in-store for parties. We do everything any full-service grocery store would do, we just do it for less."
A tour of the departments shows the Town & Country commitment to quality.
• The Town & Country Meat Department offers only Certified Angus Beef.
“Our ground beef doesn’t contain the fresh, lean finely-textured beef trimmings that have been called ‘pink slime’ in media reports,” Raab says. “Recently we added Smithfield Lean Generation pork items. There is no finer pork available. These, along with grade A poultry, and Chiappetti veal and lamb give the shopper an unparalleled variety of meats to choose from. All Town & Country Food's meats are offered with a 200% guarantee of satisfaction.”
• The Town & Country Produce Department has the freshest fruits and vegetables – something customers have come to expect. “Produce quality and availability varies with seasons and growing conditions,” Raab says. “Freshness is critical with most produce items. We use a number of suppliers and, because of our volume sales, freshness is guaranteed 200%.”
• The Town & Country Delicatessen provides the convenience and good eating in ready-to-serve foods that customers want. “You’ll find all your favorites in our deli department – processed meats and cheeses, salads and Country Style Chicken just to name a few,” Raab said.
• The Town & Country Bakeries feature goodies made from “scratch ingredients” including breads, cakes and donuts. “A host of other specialties are all prepared and baked on location in each of our stores,” Raab says.
• The Town & Country Seafood Department is where shrimp is king. “Shrimp has long been most popular of our seafood offerings. We have a great variety of shrimp available at all times,” says Raab. “But there’s much more. We carry a variety of fish, making our Seafood Departments the place for all your seafood desires.”
Whether you are planning a small gathering of friends or a large event such as a wedding, the staff at Town & Country is prepared to help make it a memorable occasion.
“Our bakery provides expert service for your special wedding day with foundation cakes, side cakes, tier cakes, floating cakes and sheet cakes,” Raab says. “Our expert decorators use pearls, colored icings, ribbons, sugar and silk flowers to create your cake.”
Other special occasions call for cakes and gourmet bakery platters – which Town & Country bakers create to order.
Choose from two dozen different deli party platters, or let Town & Country cater your special event with an array of party favorites, many featuring Larry’s Legendary Chicken.
“Call or visit one of our locations,” Raab says.
Town & Country's vision is to be recognized as the leading full service food store, exceeding customer expectations today and far into the future, he says.
“We realize that Town & Country is successful because of the dedicated efforts of our associates and we are committed to their training and development,” says Raab.
“We also remain dedicated to the communities we serve by supporting organizations and events that enhance the quality of life,” he says. “One of the biggest things we're proud of is we're entrenched in the community. Our store managers are involved in many ways, through their memberships in groups such as the Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Chambers of Commerce, depending on which groups are around each store.
“We also get involved in other not-for-profit groups that need community support. Last year Town & Country's two stores gave over $200,000 to local schools through our incentive program. Customers turn their receipts in to their school and we give 5% back to that school. They really took advantage of this program in Porter County.”
Town & Country employees are also involved in the churches in Porter County by supporting food drives, fundraisers for military families and much more, Raab says.
“We get involved in Tradewinds, Boys and Girls Clubs, high schools, baseball and softball teams, and boy and girl scouts,” he says.
“We really have no limitation on it and we try to help anyone we can,” Raab says. “That's a big difference over our competition. We all live here, we all work here and we want to make sure we get involved. We are big believers that the community spends money with us so we have to give back.”
