The Residences at Deer Creek, the region’s newest senior living community, has just opened in Schererville and residents are already enjoying an independent level of living found nowhere else. The newly-constructed senior apartments provide access to high-quality support services and modern, home-like amenities. Studio, one, and two bedroom apartments all with kitchenettes and full private baths are available. The pet friendly community offers 86 apartments with well-appointed common areas.

At Residences at Deer Creek every resident has unique needs and preferences. The goal is to support individual resident needs with customized care, service and wellness programs. Well-trained care staff provide as little or as much assistance needed to allow residents to be as independent as possible. Melissa Huffman, Director of Sales and Marketing, explains, “Ideally our residents are independent, but if they do need assistance with medication or other needs, this assistance is provided in the privacy of their apartment. This is their home. There are no medication carts pushed around, no overhead pages, nurses are not in scrubs, so it is not institutional but more like a hotel or resort. It seems like a little thing, but it has a big impact. We want residents to view us a member of their extended family and want families to take comfort in knowing that their loved one is being cared for as if it was our own mother, father, aunt or uncle.”

Residents receive a variety of services to promote carefree living including executive chef prepared meals and snacks daily, weekly housekeeping, around-the-clock access to nursing care, emergency response systems, upscale salon and spa, a wide array of events and lifestyle programming and access to local health specialists. “We are pet friendly so people can have a dog or cat, because this is your home so you should be able to bring things that are important to you. Our Director of Life Enrichment, Cindy Horgash, came from the Schererville Parks Department where she worked for 17 years and was voted the Citizen of the Year for 2012. Because she did not come from the senior living industry, she offers a fresh and innovative approach to activities as compared to other communities. Executive Chef Patrick Mundt came from a well-known local restaurant and an upscale country club so he understands the need to provide excellent food. He also caters to individual dietary needs including vegetarian, gluten-free, or diabetic. We want to make it as convenient as possible so you do not have to figure out how to manage it on your own. We will help you do that. We encourage our residents to share their favorite family recipes with our chef who will prepare it as a cooking demonstration in our exhibition kitchen which is unique and rarely found in assisted living communities. Food is all inclusive in our month to month lease. At the Bistro our residents can relax with a glass of wine or a beer before dinner or grab a lighter meal, again it is all included. It’s all the comforts of home because this is home,” Huffman says.

What also sets The Residences at Deer Creek apart from other communities is that it is primarily physician owned. Huffman says, “Our management company, WestShore, LLC, has extensive experience in senior living. They worked with the investors, who are primarily local physicians, to incorporate the latest in care technologies into the building and its operations. This provides residents and their families’ peace of mind and access to specialists in geriatrics, internal medicine, neurology, cardiology and oncology among others. For example, every resident receives a portable emergency call pendant that communicates wirelessly with our care staff. No matter where the resident is in the building, our care staff will be able to locate them and respond quickly. This eliminates the need for institutional looking emergency pull cords that may not be reachable and improves reaction time in emergency situations.”

One of the advantages of new construction is the ability to incorporate green building methods and technologies to enhance operational efficiencies and healthy living. Energy efficient heating/cooling system, locally sourced and produced materials, and low volatile organic compound generating products are a few examples of the Residences at Deer Creek’s green attributes.

Our goal is to promote an active and inclusive environment so that when new residents move in there are lots of opportunities to establish new friends. There are a variety of common areas throughout the community and on each floor, in order to encourage gathering together as neighbors and friends. We have movie screens and outdoor porches, plus a patio off of the restaurant for outdoor dining in nice weather,” she says. The community also offers 24 apartments that are designed specifically for residents with memory support needs, located in a dedicated and secure area with a private wander garden and home-like amenities. Our memory support residents enjoy an environment that continuously strives to encourage successful independence.

The Residences at Deer Creek is unlike any other senior living community. Huffman says, “When people stop by for tours, I think they can see we are different from any other senior living community. We want people to enjoy their independence and don’t want to take any of that away but we also want them to know we are here whenever they need us – just like a family taking care of its loved ones. We realize people have choices and feel privileged to serve those that choose to call the Residences at Deer Creek their home.”
