Cook County prosecutors have dropped charges against a woman who served eight years in prison after being convicted of strangling her son.
Nicole Harris was released in February after the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned her conviction. The court ruled the trial judge wrongfully prevented her older son, Diante Dancy, then 6 years old, from testifying his brother's death was an accident. Defense attorneys say he was the only witness to 4-year-old Jaquari's death.
The boy has said his brother died after an elastic band for a plastic bed sheet became wrapped around his neck.
Prosecutors contended the older boy was asleep when his younger brother died.
Harris said Monday she is looking forward to her new life after being "in limbo" and not knowing what will happen.
