INDIANAPOLIS | Add that big packet of tax forms arriving in your mailbox just after New Year's Day to the list of items replaced by technology.

The Indiana Department of Revenue announced Wednesday it will no longer mail state income tax forms to Hoosier households.

"Looking at that from a cost-effective standpoint we're not going to do that," said Stephanie McFarland, revenue department spokeswoman.

Indiana will save about $200,000 a year by eliminating the mailings, McFarland said.

Printed tax forms still will be distributed to local libraries and revenue department offices, including the Merrillville district office, 8368 Louisiana Ave., Suite A. Forms also can be downloaded and printed from the department's website:

But with two-thirds of taxpayers already filing their state income tax returns electronically it doesn't make sense to keep paying to mail forms that won't ever be used, McFarland said.

About 900,000 Hoosiers received printed tax forms in 2010. They were notified via postcard last week that the mailings have ended.

McFarland said those taxpayers should consider using the Department of Revenue's free I-File service.

"That's a fast and a very friendly tool for taxpayers to use," McFarland said.

The Internal Revenue Service also will stop automatically mailing federal tax forms starting in 2011.

Income taxes are due April 18.

The IRS added the extra days because Emancipation Day, an official holiday in Washington, D.C., will be observed on the traditional due date of April 15, and April 16 and 17 fall on the weekend.

Indiana will use the same due date as the IRS, McFarland said.
