INDIANAPOLIS | Several people have been arrested in what an FBI spokeswoman calls "investigative activity" across Indiana involving more than 300 agents.
Special Agent Wendy Osborne says the FBI's Indianapolis office brought in agents from neighboring offices for Wednesday's actions across the state.
During an initial hearing for eight of the defendants, five men and three women, U.S. Magistrate Judge Kennard Foster entered automatic not guilty pleas to unspecified charges and ordered an indictment to be unsealed. After prosecutors argued the defendants were flight risks, Foster ordered those charged to be held in federal custody and to submit urine samples.
The Indianapolis Star reports about 40 people face charges. WANE-TV in Fort Wayne reported arrests have been made in northeastern Indiana and in Elkhart.
