Measure allows guns in vehicles while at work
Bill on way to governor; lawmaker says violence at workplace more likely
INDIANAPOLIS | Legislation allowing Hoosiers to keep guns in their cars while at work is on its way to the governor.
Under House Bill 1065, businesses could not prohibit employees from storing guns in the trunks or locked glove boxes of their cars. The Indiana House and Senate both approved the measure by wide margins Thursday.
State Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, said he believes the legislation will lead to more on-the-job shootings because guns will be far more accessible.
Smith suggested that if someone wants to shoot up a workplace and he or she has to drive home to get a gun, it's likely that person will reconsider the action, while someone who just has to go to the parking lot might not.
"If you get in a moment when you're angry and you get a few moments to cool off, you might not do some of the things you might want to do," Smith said.
Certain institutions still will be allowed to ban guns in cars, including schools, child care facilities, shelters, colleges and universities, prisons, utility companies and federal facilities.
A separate section of the legislation prohibits the governor or any local authority from halting the sale of firearms during an emergency.
