Like an unwanted guest overstaying their welcome, winter showed no sign of leaving Sunday morning with Northwest Indiana residents digging out from 6 inches or more of fresh snow.
As of 9 a.m., a band of lake-effect snow was hitting Lake and Porter counties, bringing additional accumulation of a half-inch to an inch of snow per hour.
Much of Northwest Indiana will remain under a Winter Weather Advisory until midnight, according to the National Weather Service. For LaPorte County and areas east, the Winter Weather Advisory will expire at noon.
Indiana State Police said that while roads were still covered and slick in spots, conditions were beginning to clear. No serious accidents were reported overnight or Sunday morning.
Along with the snow, plunging temperatures are expected to bring near record lows to the Chicago area tonight. Wind chills may approach 15 below zero.
