Monster Dash 5K Run/Walk

Bank of America Chicago Marathon

OCT. 8, Grant Park, Chicago. Each October, approximately 40,000 runners from all 50 states and more than 100 countries race the streets of Chicago on a 26.2-mile tour of the city on foot. Spectators can cheer on participants throughout the city, including Chinatown and Lincoln Park.

Chesterton Middle School Veterans 5K Run and Walk

OCT. 14, 9 a.m., Chesterton Middle School, 651 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton. Featuring a flat route, this 5K run/walk begins at Chesterton Middle School, travels through Chesterton Cemetery and finishes at the school. Proceeds benefit Folds of Honor and provide educational scholarships to military children and spouses of military men and women killed or disabled while serving.

Great Pumpkin Dash

OCT. 14, 8 a.m., Winfield Government Center, 10645 Randolph St., Winfield. This 5K run/walk kicks off the Harvest Festival. The road course travels through residential neighborhood with one segment of off-road trail. Halloween costumes are welcomed and encouraged.

Eric Estill Memorial 5K Run/Walk and Pasta Lunch

Oct. 21, 9:30 a.m. check-in, walk/run at 11 a.m., lunch starts at 11:30 a.m., Westminster Presbyterian Church, Munster. This timed, fundraising race is in honor of Eric Estill, who was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and a 2009 graduate of Lake Central High School. Estill died in an accident five weeks before he was to graduate with his DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy). Proceeds benefit Westminster Missions and Programs, Youth/Children's Ministries and Lake Central High School's Dollars for Scholars program.

Grub Run 5K Run/Walk

OCT. 21, 9 a.m., ValPlayso Park, 1400 E. Glendale, Valparaiso. First Christian Church will host this 5K run/walk to raise funds and awareness of the ongoing struggle with hunger in Valparaiso. The course will feature a flat and fast loop around the surrounding neighborhoods. Proceeds will benefit the food pantry.

Run for Jake Cross Country Trail Run

OCT. 21, 8-10 a.m., Legacy Hills Golf Course, 286 W. Johnson Road, LaPorte. Formerly Run for the Hills, the Kiwanis Club of LaPorte, in partnership with the Play for Jake Foundation, hosts its fifth annual Run for Jake 5K cross country race, with the entire course held on grass.

Valparaiso Half Marathon

OCT. 22, 8:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., United Way of Porter County, 951 Eastport Center Drive, Valparaiso. Part of the 2017 Race the Region Series, this half-marathon has a flat, fast course with very few turns and intersections. The race concludes with a post-race party featuring music and food. Proceeds benefit United Way of Porter County's programs.

Witches Called-to-Run 5K Run/Walk

OCT. 27, 7 p.m., Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St., Crown Point. 219.662.9840. Witches and warlocks are summoned to celebrate the magic and power of the women at this themed 5K run/walk. Acitivites include a pumpkin scavenger hunt, treats, awards, a DJ Halloween Party, costume prizes and more. Proceeds benefit local women's charities.

Manda's Race

OCT. 28, 9 a.m., Westchester Intermediate School, 1050 S. Fifth St., Chesterton. 219.464.9221. Held to fight drug addiction, this 5K run/walk is for all ages. Halloween was a favorite of Manda, so costumes are encouraged.

Salvation Army Red Shield Run 5K

OCT. 28, 8 a.m., Martin T Krueger Middle School, 2001 Springland Ave., Michigan City. This 5K run/walk benefits the Salvation Army.

Halloween Howl @ Creeeekside

OCT. 29, 9 a.m., Creekside Golf Course, 2355 Clifford Road, Valparaiso. This 5K is part of Race the Region 2017.

Indianapolis Monumental Marathon

NOV. 4, Indiana State Capitol, Capitol Avenue, just north of Washington Street, Indianapolis. 317.454.8519. Now one of the 20 largest marathons in the U.S., the marathon course starts and finishes at the Indiana State Capitol, highlighting landmarks and historical neighborhoods throughout Indianapolis. Additional events include a half-marathon, a 5K and a kids' run.

Jail Break 5K Run

NOV. 4, 8:30 a.m., Old Sheriff’s House and Jail, 226 S. Main St., Crown Point. Starting and finishing at the historic jail, this 5K run/walk travels through the scenic streets of Crown Point. Each participant receives a free pass to tour the jail.

Fall Frolic

NOV. 5, 9 a.m., Purdue University Northwest FRC Building, 2300 173rd St., Hammond. 219.989.2175 Purdue University Northwest hosts this 4-mile run and 1.5-mile wellness walk in memory of Jennie Hamilton.

No One Runs Alone 5K

NOV. 11, 3 p.m., Hebron Elementary School, 307 South Main St., Hebron. Running in and around the Hebron School District prairie land, this flat, fast 5K cross-country course benefits the Hebron Middle School Mentoring Program, which helps students feel welcomed, safe and accepted at school.

2017 Valparaiso Turkey Trot

NOV. 23, 8 a.m. 10K; 8:10 a.m. 5K, Valparaiso High School, 2727 Campbell, Valparaiso. Porter-Starke Services hosts its annual 10K run and 5K walk/run, a Thanksgiving tradition.

Portage Township Turkey Trot

NOV. 23, 7:45 a.m. kid run; 8 a.m. 4-mile run and 5K run/walk, Portage Township YMCA, 3100 Willowcreek Road, Portage. 219.762.9622. For the past 17 years, this run/walk has set off on Thanksgiving morning. The event features a competitive 4-mile run, a 5K fun run/walk and a 1K kids' fun run. Proceeds benefit the Portage Township YMCA programs.

Gratitude 5K/2K Run/Walk

Reason for the Season Run

Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County 5K Arctic Dash

Festivus 5K Run and One Mile for the Rest of Us Fitness Walk

Santa Run, Walk & Ride

DEC. 23, 9 a.m., St. Mary’s School, 405 E. Joliet St., Crown Point. 219.662.9840. Since 1982, this annual non-timed walk/run spreads holiday cheer as hundreds of participants donned in Santa outfits or other holiday war walk or run down Main Street. Hosted by Robin Rock, former mid-day host of 93.9 FM, post-race activities include snacks, music and a chance to visit with Santa and Scrooge. Proceeds benefit local charities.
