GARY | The Lake County Minority Health Coalition and the Indiana Minority Health Coalition will host a town hall meeting next week about the Affordable Care Act.
The meeting will last from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at Ivy Tech, 1440 E. 35th Ave.
Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, starts Oct. 1.
Elected officials from Indiana and representatives from local medical, health care and similar organizations will discuss health care reform.
The meeting is free, and people can RSVP at (219) 885-9755. A Spanish interpreter will be on site to assist with non-English-speaking individuals.
Hospital academy offers EMT-paramedic program
CROWN POINT | The Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Crown Point Emergency Medical Services Academy will accept applications until 4 p.m. Oct. 7 for its next emergency medical technician-paramedic training program, which will begin in January.
Applications for the 11-month course are available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at the academy, located on the second floor of the hospital’s Medical Arts Center, 1201 S. Applicants must be Indiana emergency medical technicians and pass course entrance exams to be accepted into the program.

Corporate wellness clinic opens in Valpo
VALPARAISO | Porter Regional Hospital has opened a new Health At Work corporate occupational and wellness clinic at 809 LaPorte Ave.
The clinic will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
The site will provide clinical and medical services to its corporate clients.
New physicians join Franciscan Medical Specialists
Dr. Arash Koochek has joined Franciscan Medical Specialists’ Department of Dermatology.
He is board certified in dermatology and practices at the Franciscan Medical Specialists office in Dyer. He is accepting new general and cosmetic dermatology patients.

Dr. Amita Thakkar has joined Franciscan Medical Specialists Department of Rheumatology. She is board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in rheumatology.
