MUNSTER | Local families are invited to join Community Healthcare System staff members and Gift of Hope representatives at an annual ceremony to honor organ and tissue donors. 

This year’s Rose Ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road.

Roses that are personally dedicated at the ceremony go on to make up the Donate Life float in the 2013 Rose Parade. Each of the roses sponsored by Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart will carry tags with messages of love from the donor families.

Self-defense class is Nov. 7

VALPARAISO | Porter Regional Hospital’s Healthy Woman Program will host a free Self-defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange class for women 18 years and older from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 7 at Porter’s Education & Rehabilitation Center, 1401 Calumet Ave., Valparaiso. 

During the course, Purdue North Central campus police will share information on how to become more aware of surroundings and teach five basic self-defense techniques to help women stay safe.

IUN hosts suicide conference

GARY | The Indiana University Northwest Wellness Team and the Northwest Indiana Suicide Prevention Council are sponsoring this year’s Faces of Suicide conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Nov. 9 in the John W. Anderson Library Conference Center. 

The focus will be “Suicide and Substance Abuse - A Life Saving Journey” presented by keynote speaker Leland Stephen, director of services for Adults with Serious Mental Illness for Community Health Network in Indianapolis.

Other topics include youth suicide, suicide prevention and the role of the court.

Registration is $30 for students and $60 for all others. The fee includes a continental breakfast, boxed lunch, handouts, and a Professional Continuing Education Unit certificate. Registration is due Friday. Late registrations may be accepted if space is available.


Hospital staff models fashions

MERRILLVILLE | The Methodist Hospitals Auxiliary presents Stepping in Style with Staff and Friends, at 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30. 

Dinner is included and there is a cash bar.

Models are Methodist Hospitals employees and physicians, and they will be modeling their own high fashion clothing.

Tickets are $35 each and may be purchased at both hospital campuses in the gift shop or volunteer’s office. Tickets also may be be purchased at the door for $50 each.
