1. What are the great strengths of your healthcare system?

Porter Regional Hospital has many great strengths and reasons why our community members do not have to leave Northwest Indiana for their healthcare needs.

First, let’s start with new equipment and advanced technology. Porter Regional Hospital made the commitment to technology and medical advancements by investing in nearly 80% new equipment. Some of the new equipment includes a 16-slice radiation reduction CT, a second daVinci surgical robotic platform, 1.5T MRI System, real-time digital radiography and advanced interventional cardiac monitors

Now, let’s talk nationally recognized, evidence-based care. According to leading independent healthcare reporting agencies that recognize excellence in health care, Porter patients are receiving nationally ranked, top quality care. This past year, Porter Regional Hospital received national recognition and accolades by the Joint Commission, American Heart Association, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Distinction, the Leapfrog Group on quality and clinical safety practices, HealthGrades, the Society of Chest Pain Centers, the American College of Radiology and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

2. Where is the growth of your business going to come from near-term?

There are several areas of growth and two that are top-of-mind include our clinical affiliation with Loyola University Health System and our new corporate wellness program, Health At Work.

In regard to our clinical affiliations and partnerships: Just 10 short months after our move, Porter Regional Hospital entered into a clinical affiliation with one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, Loyola University Health System. That means Porter patients can still retain the comforts and convenience of their home hospital while benefiting from academic research and evidence-based quality care by Loyola’s clinical specialists. The first two areas you’ll be seeing Loyola’s leading-edge presence is in our Emergency Department and our Cancer Care Center. In our Emergency Department, Loyola’s neurologists will be enhancing our on-call coverage with a new telemedic robot that will help diagnose and treat stroke patients. In Porter Regional Hospital’s Cancer Care Center, patients will have access to clinical trials conducted by Loyola faculty close to home.

Another area that will play a big role in our business growth is Porter Regional Hospital’s new corporate wellness program, Health At Work. At Porter Regional Hospital, we know a healthy workplace contributes to a healthy bottomline. By partnering with businesses, Porter's Health At Work program offers a comprehensive range of job-related wellness and medical services that can be custom-tailored to fit the specific needs of local organizations.

3. What are the most important strategic investments and innovations you are making in your business right now that will pay off in the future?

We are strategically growing Porter Regional Hospital’s award-winning centers of excellence – Center for Cardiovascular Medicine, Center for Women’s Health, Cancer Care Center, Center for Orthopedic Medicine and our new Neuroscience Center – which have received national recognition and accolades from many highly-regarded organizations. To better meet the needs of our community, we are also expanding our CareEXPRESS Urgent Care Centers throughout Porter County and recently opened our third site at Porter Regional Hospital’s Portage Hospital location.

4. What do you consider your most important achievement in the past 3 years?

There are many, but by far the most substantial achievement is the building and opening of Porter Regional Hospital in August 2012. From the ground up, Porter Regional Hospital defines “innovative” and “efficient” and focuses 100 percent on the patient. The opening of Porter Regional Hospital marked the culmination of years of planning driven by a vision of bringing personalized, patient-centered care and best-practice medical resources to Northwest Indiana to enhance the community we serve. Today, as we near our one year anniversary, we continue to advance in our clinical practices and exceed expectations with our achievements on both a regional and national level.

5. What is your biggest challenge/opportunity coming up in 2014?

Porter Regional Hospital’s biggest opportunity in 2014 is to position ourselves to remain ahead of the transforming healthcare landscape. The healthcare landscape is going through profound changes and we are strategically working to be proactive and quality driven to best anticipate the future of healthcare.
