Camps for preschool children with developmental disabilities

HOBART | Center for Possibilities, 22 Tyler Ave., will have three two-week camps for children ages 2 through 5 with developmental disabilities. Families with preschoolers who have multiple and severe disabilities are encouraged to apply. Children with a developmental disability are eligible.

Each camp will provide opportunities to play, learn and grow using the themes "On Your Mark ... Get Set ... Go! Sports Camp," "Spirit of the Seas — Vacation Bible School" and "Once Upon a Time Fairy Tales Camp."

Each camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. A $20 one-time enrollment fee for the whole summer is due at time of enrollment and includes a camp T-shirt, group photo and all supplies. Camp fees are $40 per each two-week camp, also due at enrollment. A waiting list will be created once full enrollment is reached.

DeMotte Library offers free, low-cost health screenings

DEMOTTE | Free blood pressure/glucose screenings and $5 total cholesterol screenings are available from 9 to 11 a.m. today at the DeMotte Library, 901 Birch St.

Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is Thursday

MERRILLVILLE | Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Horizon Bank, 8590 Broadway. Representatives and volunteers from the Alzheimer's Association will explain the Walk to End Alzheimer's (formerly known as the Memory Walk) and how to get involved. Participants can learn fun tips at the fundraising fair.

Support group for Alzheimer's caregivers one day per month

CROWN POINT | Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group of Crown Point and surrounding communities meets from 2:30 to 4 p.m. the second Sunday each month at Franciscan Adult Day Services, 203 Franciscan Drive. The meeting is open to family and friends who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. Franciscan Adult Day Services can provide on-site adult day care services for registered persons during the meeting for a fee.

Discount heart, vascular tests available at assisted living site

LAPORTE | The Heart Cart will visit Brentwood Assisted Living, 2002 Andrew Avenue, from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday and the Indiana University Health LaPorte Heart and Vascular Center, 901 Lincolnway, from 7:30 to 11 a.m. July 19 for discount heart and vascular screenings.

The package offers a comprehensive picture of cardiovascular health with testing reviewed by a board certified physician. The tests are for abnormal heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysm, blood pressure, fasting cholesterol and glucose levels, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, poor leg circulation, stroke and weight. Results will be mailed to the individual three to four weeks following the tests. Individuals can take the results to their doctors for follow-up.

Registration is required. The service, normally worth $1,200, is being offered for $100, payable by cash, check or credit card. In order to offer this service at a discount rate, Indiana University Health LaPorte Hospital does not bill insurance for the services; patients are responsible for payment in full. Space is limited.

Indiana University Northwest to host blood drive Thursday

The Indiana University Northwest Student Alumni Association will host a blood drive through the American Red Cross from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in the Moraine Student Center, on the north end of the IUN campus in Gary, just one-half mile south of Interstate 80/94.
