CHICAGO | A new report released by the American Medical Association shows office-based physicians in LaPorte County play a vital role in Indiana's economy by supporting jobs, purchasing goods and services and generating tax revenue. In 2009, LaPorte County physicians contributed a total of $177 million to the economy, supported 966 jobs and generated $6 million in tax revenue.

The study, announced by the Indiana State Medical Association, found that, in comparison to other industries, office-based physicians almost always contribute more to state economies than each of the following: hospital, legal, nursing home and home health.

"Most people don't think of physician practices as small businesses. As such, they contribute greatly to the economic vitality of our local communities and state," said Dr. Brent Mohr, ISMA president.

The findings show the economic impact of office-based physicians as measured through sales revenue, jobs, wages and benefits and tax revenue. The report provides information on the economic impact of office-based physicians in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

In Indiana, office-based physicians supported $9.6 billion in wages and benefits, and generated $581.4 million in taxes.
