Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries in older Americans, according to the National Council on Aging. One in four Americans 65 and older falls each year. Every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. Every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.
This time of year, when snow and ice can make surfaces slippery and more difficult to navigate, it’s even more important to be vigilant in working to prevent falls.
