What is patchouli?

Native to India and Malaysia, this aromatic herb is used to scent candles, incense and body products. The stamp of authenticity of cashmere shawls made in India during England's Victorian period was the distinct aroma of the dried herb included during shipping to repel destructive moths. The characteristic smell of India ink is produced by mixing the essential oils of patchouli and camphor.

What does it do?

Aromatherapists add patchouli oil to vaporizers to combat anxiety and depression. A finer skin conditioner is hard to find as patchouli rejuvenates tissue while facilitating new skin cell growth. Asian healers use patchouli to treat nausea and vomiting. By helping to balance the endocrine system, patchouli has a positive effect on the body's hormonal functions.

About the herb

Bearing white, purple-tinged flowers, patchouli grows between 2 and 3 feet in height, its stem assuming a square shape. Patchouli can be grown indoors.

Recommended dosage

Apply patchouli oil directly to insect stings. Added to lotions and creams, the oil is effective in the treatment of fungal disorders like athlete's foot, and it makes an effective deodorant.
