Indiana Toll Road ups NWI speed limit

Indiana Toll Road Concession Co. has increased the speed limit from milepost 20 to the Illinois line to 70 mph for cars and 65 mph for trucks.

The increase follows the recent completion of the third lane expansion project between milepost 10 and milepost 15.5 in Gary. The speed limit from the Illinois line to milepost 20 in Lake Station formerly was 55 mph for cars and trucks.

A traffic study of the area conducted by the Indiana Department of Transportation prior to the change collected data that supported the change, according to Indiana Toll Road Concession Co., the private operator of the road.

The speed limit remains 55 mph between milepost 20 and milepost 25.5 to accommodate heavier traffic around the milepost 23 Portage Toll Plaza. The speed limit returns to 70 mph for cars and 65 mph for trucks from milepost 25.5 to the Ohio line.
