SEPT 24 Health Services for Uninsured & Under-Insured Families, 2-3pm, Lake County Public Library Lake Station-New Chicago Branch, 2007 Central Ave, Lake Station. 219.962.2409. Community Outreach Coordinator from NorthShore Health Centers, Michelle Higel, discusses a variety of options available for families without medical and dental insurance. The free seminar covers the Hoosier Healthwise program and sliding scale fees available for uninsured and under-insured families.

SEPT 26 50 Fit & Fabulous, 6:30pm, Old Town Banquet Center, 711 Calumet, Valparaiso. 219.462.4185. Benefitting the Valparaiso Family YMCA’s Community Assistance Program, this event features a style show, food, fun, music, a cocktail reception and more.

SEPT 26, OCT 24 Blood Pressure Screening, 10am-noon, Lake County Public Library Munster Branch, 8701 Calumet Ave, Munster. 219.836.8450. Free blood pressure screenings provided by a representative from Hospice of the Calumet Area. No appointments or registration needed.

SEPT 26 Coronary Health Appraisal, 8-10:30am, Community Hospital Outpatient Centre, 9660 Wicker Ave, St. John. 219.836.3477. This appraisal determines a participant’s risk for heart disease and other related medical conditions. Screening includes cholesterol (total, HDL, LDL and triglycerides), hemoglobin A1C and average estimated glucose, metabolic syndrome, blood pressure, body mass index and a heart health profile. Fasting for 10-12 hours is required. Register by phone.

SEPT 26 Managing Medicare, 1:30-3pm, Hebron Public Library, 201 W Sigler Rd, Hebron. 219.996.3684. This presentation on the basics of Medicare will help participants understand the difference between the types of Medicare coverage. The program is free and registration is requested.

SEPT 27-29 Covered Bridge Harvest Festival, Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S Court St, Crown Point. 219.661.3071. Honoring the only “covered bridge” in Lake County, this festival focuses on family fun, handmade crafts and entertainment. Friday evening begins with the Pumpkin Bash and silent auction, while Saturday features arts and crafts, pumpkin games and entertainment. Proceeds benefit the development of the Special Olympics Lake County Training Facility and improvements at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

SEPT 28 Hooked on Art—Live Street Art Festival, 9am-5pm, Thomas Centennial Park, 176 Broadway, Chesterton. 219.728.1638. This community-wide family event presents a variety of artistic talent from across the region. In addition to live street art, the event features interactive family activities, music, shopping and more.
