History has told countless stories about the tradition and meaning behind the white wedding dress.
Modern brides are writing their own stories by taking the white wedding dress and making it all their own.
"Brides want to come up with something they haven't already seen," says Cathy Brown, owner of Catherine's Bridal Boutique in Valparaiso. To accomplish that goal, brides are choosing to incorporate color into their gowns. Some brides choose a wedding dress in colors straight from the rainbow or just a hint of color.
Brown says she's had brides choose red wedding dresses, and others choose a small item like their shoes in their favorite color or in the wedding colors.
A recent trend Brown has seen are brides wearing colored headbands in lieu of tiaras to pull off their color desire.
Newlywed Raquel Wood of Hobart, knowing her wedding day had to be an expression of uniqueness, chose Indianapolis Colts' Blue—her husband Michael's favorite sports team and her favorite color.
After finding out she could have her wedding shoes dyed blue, she turned to the Internet for more color options. On her wedding day, Wood donned a blue, shoulder-length veil.
"After the wedding everyone said how beautiful everything was and that they've never seen anyone wear a different color veil," Wood says. "I love that they [her guests] will always remember it."
Christina Zukowski, a local wedding coordinator and owner of Devoted Wedding and Events, says she loves seeing brides think outside of the box. Zukowski says while brides have a lot more color-inspired dress options and a variety of colors to choose from, they should know it's still like traditional dress shopping. "It may take a while to find exactly what you're looking for," Zukowski says.
One of her favorite ways a bride added color to her dress was with a purple rhinestone belt that coordinated with her wedding colors. She says it was beautiful and different. "I encourage it," Brown says. "It's an easy way to put a personal stamp on a gown."
