The wedding ceremony is a union between two individuals. This joining of two people has a lot of history. While looking forward to the future, it is also important to look back and see what brought you to this moment. Traditions of ceremonies are changing, so why not make the little things that define your relationship a part of the celebration? With a little thought and creativity, you can come up with many different ideas and even themes to implement into the wedding festivities to make it "yours."

So often people get lost in the planning of the wedding and assume that the bride makes most of the decisions when in reality every aspect should represent both of you. It can be something as simple as using "your" song, or where you met, or your favorite season. All the different little pieces that make up how you met and the places you like to go together can be used in an aspect of your wedding day.

• COLOR: When choosing the colors, use choices that are both your favorite in a way that compliments the other. It may take varying the shade, but make it a representation of both of you.

• FLOWERS: Select flowers that hold special meaning to you. Maybe one of you gave the other flowers on your first date, or you planted flowers in a garden together....why not carry that special flower or part of that plant down the aisle?

• TABLE NUMBERS: Instead of using numbers, incorporate the overall theme into naming the tables after what you love doing together. It could be amusement parks (Carousel, Roller Coaster), zoos (Tiger, Bear, Zebra), camping (Pine Cone, Campfire), traveling (London, Paris, Rome), muscle cars (Barracuda, Camaro) shopping (Macys, Barnes&Noble), gadgets (iPod, Xbox), or going to museums (Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium). Have fun with it!

• FAVORS: You can let the favors be another representation of something you love, whether it be a miniature of your theme or a favorite chocolate or other dessert. Another lasting gift can be a donation to a charity you are both passionate about.

• VENUE: Is there a park, favorite beach or even art gallery that you both love to go to? What about having the ceremony in your (or another family member's) garden? Do you have a favorite spot that can hold a tent?

Don't lose sight of the significance of the wedding's not just one day, it is the foundation for the beginning of your new life together. Whether you feel you are a practical, informal couple or if you lean towards the extravagant. However big or small, show who you really are, not who you think you are supposed to be for a ceremony just because millions of people before you did it a certain way. Let your day represent who you really are. You will have a blast (and this way, so will he!) planning it and celebrating the big day!
