Last Saturday I happened to be in St. Joe, Michigan when I realized I might need some Grand Mark champagne for my Christmas Day party, so I quickly ran over to the Tabor Hill outlet and art gallery in Benton Harbor. I hadn't been there in a while and forgot how charming it is. Tabor Hill has added more wine selections than ever and I ended up tasting several dry whites that were quite good---riesling, chardonnay and a blend---and very economically priced. There were a few other people but it was fun and cold white wine tastes good in the winter. The gallery and tasting room are easy to find at 80 West Main near the corner where the Benton Harbor Arts District starts. Call 800-283-3363 for seasonal hours.

Of course, the perfect place to shop is downtown St. Joe, where every retailer seems to have free samples of something. (Check out Harbortown Interiors, especially if you owe somebody---like yourself---a gift.) And the White Pine Winery right there at 317 State St. between the galleries and the shops in downtown St. Joe. I've also tasted White Pine Winery wines and attended a pairing dinner at Bistro on the Boulevard last Spring, so I have to recommend that as well if you are looking for fun this weekend. White Pine is open Fri-Sat 11am - 7pm and noon - 5 on Sunday.
