Big night in Benton Harbor, super farmers market at Emerald Avenue Coloma, A Solidier's Story Friday on WFMT and fireworks already next Tuesday at the Dunes.

The Box Factory and Other Artists on Friday: This started out as a day of unusually beautiful weather in the morning so I started calling around to see who was going to be available for an evening in Michigan. About an hour later, I was going to a preview of the 11th annual Michiana Annual Arts Competition at the Box Factory for the Arts in Benton Harbor with Southwestern Michigan Tourism Council Chief Millicent Huminsky (SMTC sponsored the exhibit.). I loved the show and it will be open until August 8th. My most favorite painting was Cocktail Hour by artist Tim MacDonald of St. Joe, which placed in the second prize field, but it was unfortunately out of my price range. Also, out of my price range but very interesting --- the grand prize winning ceramics piece called Problem Girls by Steve Hansen, an artist from Berrien Springs, which was judged Best in Show. I did not walk away totally empty-handed though. I had a receipt for a photo I bought by Chloe Topolski called Trails for later pickup. And I admit I had a lot of fun schmoozing with the Box Factory folks especially Judith Sokolowski, who is one of my constant correspondents. The Box Factory is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am-4 pm and on Sunday from 1-4pm.

Then I caught up with Mike McCluskey, Denise DeClue, Mary and Andy Shaw who were busily admiring Scott Elliott's still life paintings at his new gallery in the BH Arts District. Scott Elliott had one of the very first galleries in that area. There are more galleries than ever now and a festive street party atmosphere prevailed Friday night. There were some phone calls from the Shaws Bridgman neighbors wanting us to join them at the Grille at Harbor Shores. (This has come to be known as the place for excellent food at a very reasonable cost.) But our group opted to stay local and take advantage of the gourmet menu at the Ideal Place.

Pro-activities on Pre-Season Patriotic Fun: Indiana Dunes State Park will have fireworks on July 2 around 9 pm (CT). Indiana Dunes State Park, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the town of Porter will host Fireworks on the Lakefront. Fireworks will be launched from a barge on Lake Michigan in front of the park’s beach pavilion. Activities start at 6 pm and include local food vendors and live music. Swimming hours will be extended to 8 pm. A free shuttle will be provided from Yost Elementary School in Porter and Westchester Intermediate School in Chesterton. Those hoping to park inside the state park should arrive before 6 pm and expect long admission lines

A Note from Actor, Screenwriter and Comedian Tim Kazurinsky: Tim K. stars in a radio drama presentation of Igor Stravinsky's, The Soldier's Tale re-broadcast on WFMT Friday, June 28 just after 5 pm. The radio show was originally broadcast live from Space in Evanston. Nicholas Rudall is also in the play, along with a nonet of amazing Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians.
