Wine, women (and men) shoppers and song at this Saturday's annual Grand Party at Customs Imports in New Buffalo as Dee Dee Duhn leads a growing roster of small businesses into the height of the 2012 season.
Customs Imports Kicks-Off December Series of Grand Weekend Parties: Drawing support from a growing roster of New Buffalo small businesses Dee Dee Duhn has edged her traditional week night bash to Saturday this year, starting at 6 pm. EST. While Ms Duhn will continue to top her personal best party outfit again this year, she is urging her guests to do the same. Whether you choose funky casual, cocktail chic or black tie, she wants you to look sharp. No matter what you're wearing, if you are a first-time party-goer you'll be amazed at Customs' showroom. If you are an annual shopper at this event you know that you'll see custom jewelry and more one-of-a-kind gifts than you'll find anywhere else. Furniture is also a big interest to party-goers. (I seem to alternate between the two big categories but always manage to pick up stocking-stuffers for men --- house and garden --- and women, including bath products, elegant small bags and adornments.) The Grand Party food is outstanding, especially if you arrive on time and the wine bar is well-stocked. This year there are more participants than ever including Tim Sizer and Timothy's, Sahara restaurant, Skip's, Casey's Bar & Grill, Villa Nova, Grateful Diner and Three Oaks Journeyman Distillery. The music talent will be excellent as always and there will be karaoke with the stars. Ticket prices are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and you get $10 gift certificate for Customs at the door. (I have never failed to use this gift certificate within 24 hours.)
Afternoon-to-Evening Peggy Lee Party at Fritz Olsen Gallery in Sawyer: Also December 1st, Fritz Olsen is holding a gift sale-silent auction benefit for Radio Harbor Country (WRHC). “Is That All There Is?” a radio play billed as a “droll homage” to Peggy Lee written by a college cohort of mine at the U of I---Gail Isaacson---will be performed by Robert Swan, Arnie Saks, Gwynne Winsberg and Gina McLaughlin. Also, there will be a raffle for an outpost sports beach cruiser, a wine reception following the radio play and admission is free. The festivities begin at noon and continue until 5 pm. EST.
Looking Ahead for Music-Lovers: The Holiday Pops concert by NISO at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville next Thursday is probably going sell-out as usual, but as of today there are still tickets available and at reasonable prices: $25-$65, and students for $10. Then on Saturday, December 8th, Tom Collins and Luke Oil are hosting a concert to benefit local veterans and active duty personnel at 7 pm. With live local bands performing acoustic sets. Tickets are $20 and all active duty personnel will be admitted free. For more information check out The Times' nwi.com or www.countylineorchard.com or call 219.947.4477.
