Acorn Theater in Three Oaks hosts a singer-songwriter contest tonight; Harbor Shores is building a $26 million luxury high-rise hotel to open in time for the Memorial Day PGA and Dawn of the Dunes Marathon in Miller on Sunday.
Three Oaks’ Acorn Theater’s First Annual Singer Songwriter Contest Tonight: Come be enthralled by the 12-15 finalists who have made the cut. At these finals, the judges (Andrew Salgado; Colin Peterik and Jim Peterik) will narrow the contestants down to the two they consider the best, and the audience members will proceed to pick the winner. Finals start at 8 pm (ET) and admission is $10.
Finalists will be featured on the Acorn YouTube channel, and the Grand Prize Winner will complete a professional recording under the guidance of Andrew Salgado at Jim Peterik's multi-million dollar, state of the art studio in Chicago; production and editing by Colin Peterik, Jim's son. (Jim Peterik is the legendary rock star of bands Ides of March and Survivor with hits such as Eye of the Tiger and Vehicle among many others. Jim is actively involved in helping talented performers advance in their careers). Andrew Salgado just won the Pepsi Southern Original Contest - beating out 50,000 entries to win a recording contract--- he opens for Toby Keith, Eli Young Band and Darryl Worley, has co-written top chart songs and performed as the opener for Ides of March, Bo Bice, and Casey Abrams. His first CD was just released August 6th. Colin Peterik is considered one of the top rising starts in the recording industry.
Notes for the Future: The Inn at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor is the first high-rise hotel built on Lake Michigan’s southwest shores in more than 10 years, will open in the Spring of next year. The $26 million full-service luxury property – which will be a host site for the 2014 Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid – will include 92 guestrooms, 14 suites, 10,000 square feet of event space, and Plank’s Tavern - a restaurant serving handcrafted food and beverages featuring local ingredients, set in a casual environment on the water.
Dawn of the Dunes Marathon at Marquette Park on Sunday: Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson joined other city officials, event organizers and sponsors at a press conference to share details about the “Dawn of the Dunes” Marathon at Marquette Park. The event is the first of its kind for the steel city and will also include a half marathon, 5K and fun run for children taking place Sunday, October 27th at 7:30a.m. in Marquette Park. An awards brunch will also be held at Marquette Park Pavilion following the races. Tickets are $25, and the brunch is open to the public. Dawn of the Dunes Marathon sponsors and partners include the Gary Community School Corporation, Majestic Star Casino, Prompt Ambulance and the Methodist Hospitals Foundation among others.
