If it’s been a while since you’ve visited Fair Oaks Farms, you may be surprised at all that has changed in the past few years.
The attraction that initially brought in families to learn about dairy farming has expanded in recent years to include the Pig Adventure, a gourmet restaurant, The Farmhouse and more. It’s become kind of a one-stop facility of education on modern agriculture.
“We offer a variety of activities that families can do while they are here, including interactive exhibits at both the Dairy Adventure and Pig Adventure, state-of-the-art virtual activities and movies,” said Leslie Rusk, marketing and special events director.
In an afternoon at Fair Oaks Farms you can experience the birth of a farm animal, exhibits about hog and dairy farming, a stroll through a garden and a enjoy scoop of ice cream or sample cheeses fresh from the farm all on an eco-friendly space that runs on energy from the farm’s waste.
“One of the most popular activities that families enjoy here at Fair Oaks Farms is watching our calves or piglets being born. There is nothing quite like it,” Rusk said. “During the summer we open our outdoor play area called Mooville, which is full of fun experiences such as the 25-foot climbing milk bottle. Our Pork Education Center features a brand new adorable custom treehouse and a three-story rope maze and this year we plan on adding on to our experience by opening our Winfield Crop Adventure.”
The Mooville area officially opens on Memorial Day and also includes the Dairy Air jumping pillow, train rides and mini tractors.
A number of summer events will begin soon, which Rusk said are very well-attended.
“Other activities that families enjoy at Fair Oaks Farms are our special events such as our upcoming Fair in the Air kite festival and our charitable third annual Dog-A-Palooza, which just opened registration for our 2K Dog Walk,” Rusk said. “The last experience that is essential to your visit at Fair Oaks Farms is the tasting portion. From the Cowfé to the Farmhouse Restaurant to the new Dairycatessan, there are several places where you can buy or taste exclusive Fair Oaks Farms products that have been harvested right from our farms. We are also happy to announce that we will be the hosting location of the Indiana Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on April 30 and May 1.”
There are several ways to get a taste of the farm. The Cowfé is where you can get a casual sandwich, soup or ice cream treat or can also grab some award-winning cheese to take home. There’s a connecting gift shop for other tasty treats or fun novelty items as well as a chance to see some of it being made in the Cheese Factory.
The Farmhouse is a more upscale sit-down establishment with gourmet entrees such as espresso crusted pork ribeye, pecan crusted walleye and braised pot roast as well as classy sandwiches in large portions and artisan pizzas. A kids menu includes favorites of the younger set. The Farmhouse also has special events throughout the year, including an upcoming Mother’s Day Brunch and a chocolate tasting with craft beer and wine pairings.
