While plenty of young children spent part of this past summer watching the London Olympics and dreaming of competing in one of the many exciting events someday, Miah Bruns was already living a version of that dream.

Having qualified as the Indiana state champion in four different events (trampoline, synchronized trampoline, double mini-trampoline and tumbling), the fourth-grader at Illinois Lutheran Elementary School in Crete spent a week in July at the USA Gymnastics Trampoline and Tumbling Junior Olympic Championships in Long Beach, Calif. In the end, Miah’s persistence and hours of hard work every week at Midwest Training and Ice Center in Dyer paid off, as she earned first place in her age group in both the trampoline and tumbling events.

Being the National Champion in one’s sport of choice can lead to discussions of loftier goals and aspirations, but Miah’s continued love for trampoline and tumbling is rooted as much in her desire to have fun as it is in moving on to ever-greater heights. Even so, she admits that — like most kids this year — she hopes to eventually have the opportunity to bounce on the world’s biggest stage. “I would like to do trampoline in the Olympics one day,” she says.

For now, however, it’s back to school to indulge some of her other interests like art and math. After all, even though one day kids may tune in to the 2020 Olympics to watch Miah compete for gold on the mats or the trampoline, being a world-class gymnast is just one of several things she has in mind for the future.

“I would like to be a doctor or a veterinarian when I grow up,” she says.
