I am thankful that all four of my grandparents immigrated to the United States from Lithuania. From that, I was blessed to have wonderful parents who made the wise decision to raise four of us in Highland, where I had a memorable childhood and education. I'm grateful for Inland Steel (Arcelor Mittal) which provided employment for my father, myself for 10 years, and other family members, too.

As an adult, I'm thankful for my sister and brothers, nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends. I'm fortunate to have had a long career with cherished colleagues at Johnston School.

Today, I feel lucky to be part of a terrific staff at Highland Middle School. And even though I'm all about Highland as a Highland High School grad, I do appreciate the Griffith neighborhood where I've lived for 11 years. We have a forward-thinking Town Council and hard-working public service employees.

I hope everyone can reflect upon reasons for their happiness at Thanksgiving this year.

Mark Ashmann, Griffith
