To me, the 2nd Amendment isn't about guns, but about protecting ourselves from our government. Looking at it from their end, they had just won their freedom from an oppressive government and didn't want that to happen again. So, how best to prevent that from happening again was to have local and regional militias to be armed to stand up to the federal government and their army. Some say that militias are now National Guard, but are they really?
So few people today know what the Bill of Rights are. They have heard of the 1st and 2nd amendments and possibly even the 5th and 6th amendments. Ask someone, "What is the 3rd Amendment?" and look at their blank face.
