2017 Letters to the editor stock

The simplest way to eliminate controversy over the response to "The Star-Spangled Banner" during football games is to stop singing it.

A football game and every other sporting contest is not a patriotic event. Singing the national anthem before watching a bunch of heavies crashing into each other is nonsensical.

The mere act of singing does not prove one's patriotism. Patriotism is shown by doing something to benefit everyone in the country.
