Being “great” is about helping and not taking or punishing. America was and is great when:
- President Abraham Lincoln kept punitive actions against the South at a minimum after the Civil War.
- After World War II, when it aided the recovery of not only its allies but also its enemies.
- It welcomes refugees from severely damaged countries.
- It instituted social programs such as Social Security, Medicare Medicaid and the VA.
We can have the greatest military, industrial and financial institutions in the world, but if they are not used to assist us in doing good things what’s the point?
